Abstract

The oldest herbarium in the Czech Republic (1595)

A forgotten Renaissance herbarium from 1595 was recently found in the Muzeum Broumovska, Broumov (Braunau), Czech Republic. It is the oldest hortus siccus known in collections in the Czech Republic. Its author was Johann Brehe from Überlingen, a son-in-law of a famous Renaissance creator of herbaria Hieronymus Harder of Ulm. The paper shows the connections of the Broumov Herbarium with the oldest herbaria, especially those from the circle of his father-in-law Hieronymus Harder. Furthermore, it analyses the possible ways, how the herbarium got to the Muzeum Broumovska in Broumov. The text also describes the form of the herbarium and its specifics. We also highlight the importance of Czech monasteries as sources of unique, unpublished documents dealing with both the natural and social sciences.
