Abstract

“I spent the best years of my life in Ghana”: Africa by Jan Krekule

Plant physiologist Jan Krekule (1931-2022) worked as a researcher at the Cocoa Research Institute in Ghana from 1966 to 1968 under the agreement between the Czechoslovak and Ghanaian Academies of Sciences at the time. He joined as Head of the Department of Plant Physiology and, in this position, he proposed and subsequently implemented two new topics: hormonal regulation of premature dropping of young cocoa fruits (cherelle wilting) and the effect of direct sunlight on the growth of cocoa plants. He therefore sought ways to promote the fertility of cocoa trees by applying plant hormones and to optimise seedling production. Tomáš Hermann and Jacques Joseph conducted a memorial interview with Jan
Krekule shortly before his death about the research, as well as the cultural and social context of his fellowship in Ghana.
