The article focuses on the birth and exploitation of the two research vessels built during the existence of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) specifically for the needs of biological research of sea fishing as well as marine fauna in general. Based on preserved documents, it shows contemporary methods of work and research targeting. At the same time, the article contextualizes these activities with regard to the official tradition of the German natural science, personified here by Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919).
