Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the German University in Prague in 1920–1945

Abstract

Chemistry was established at the University of Prague – mainly in connection with medicine - already in the 19th century. In the interwar period, the German University in Prague had two chemical institutes: the large general Institute for Chemistry and the smaller, younger Institute for Physical Chemistry.
This study traces their internal development, the topics of their dissertations and their personnel. Special attention is paid to the key figures of both institutes in the period under review: the organicists Hans Meyer and Ernst Waldschmidt-Leitz, and the physical chemists Viktor Rothmund and Johann Böhm.
