Abstract

The introductory article devoted to the fiftieth anniversary since the first publication of Jane Goodall’s book In the Shadow of Man (1971) sums up the context, motivation and the beginning of Goodall’s research of the life of the chimpanzees in the National Park Gombe in Tanzania. It honours her essential contribution, establishing herself in the scientific community and other Goodall’s activities in nature protection, ecology and environmentalism.
